Feminist Mormon Housewives » Female Privilege and Anti-Feminism

Men are not the only recipients of gender-based benefits in our society. Society does grant women some privileges based on gender, such as the ubiquitous draft immunity. That is undoubtedly a privilege. Which is to say that female privilege does exist. But compare the two lists, and it becomes clear very quickly. Male privilege is what matters, and female privilege is a collection of shitty consolation prizes. You’re a woman: You have a much lower chance of ever being a political leader, or of ever controlling any decisions made in geopolitics. The boys game of war is likely to victimize you horrifically. But if the boys ever do decide to go to war, you won’t get drafted. Doesn’t that make you happy? You’ve got female privilege! // via @azurelunatic

“So, it’s obvious I am jealous?” cue the ego deflation. “Uh, yes. Majorly. You’re anxious about when you’re going to be ready, you’re anxious for a girl to like you, and you’re angry that this person in your class is doing what you can’t, and you’re probably a little pissed that she isn’t doing it with you.” Did I just unpack slut-shaming for the 11 year old? Yes, I think I did.

    Health Care Reform Is a Woman's Issue - NYTimes.com

Last week Michelle Obama gave a powerful speech explaining why health insurance reform was a woman’s issue. Her arguments were subsequently dramatized by a telling exchange between Senator John Kyl, a Republican from Arizona, and Senator Debbie Stabenow, a Democrat from Michigan, last Friday in a Senate Finance Committee meeting. Senator Kyl articulated the view that the federal government should not tell private health insurance companies what benefits they should offer. For instance, he does not think he should be required to pay premiums to help finance maternity costs, since he has never needed maternity care. As Senator Stabenow calmly observed, “I think your mom did.”

A conversation was met about The Social Network and how it should get the fuck out of various persons' lives (mine included) because we don't care about its tale of rich, white dudes being rich and white and apparently representing the story of my generation in which no one like me is present. Then, in the course of the conversation, the super common caveat came up. That is: on a technical level, it's a good movie. And here's the thing about that: NO. ... You can, as an individual, think that whatever technical merits you manage to find in it outweigh the fact that it fails at not being hella offensive (see also: the compartmentalization mentioned at the beginning of this post), but that doesn't mean that I must capitulate to the idea that those merits "objectively" make it good.

It's great to see these men taking a stand against what some have deemed TSA-sanctioned sexual assault, but I have to wonder why their indignation was so long in the making. For years, women have complained about agents copping a feel: in 2004 (when the TSA first experimented with gropey pat-downs), there were already hundreds of women who'd complained about the TSA's invasive procedures. But now that a bunch of guys are calling foul, the media is suddenly paying attention and people are outraged. Tyner's story went viral, but what about the stories of women—and children—that've stayed relatively quiet? ... The TSA tried out a touchy-feely policy once before, back in '04, that was recalled due to public outrage and the implementation of whole-body scanners. So why did the TSA think that people would be any more accepting of those same pat-downs just a few years later? Actually, if it hadn't been for the critical mass of angry dudes, they might just have gotten away with it.

About three-quarters of the men that Margolis and Fisher interviewed fit the profile of someone with an intense and immediate attraction to computing that started at a young age, in contrast to about one-quarter of the women in their study. Fisher explained, “There is a dominant culture of ‘this is how you do computer science,’ and if you do not fit that image, that shakes confidence and interest in continuing.” According to Margolis and Fisher (2002, p. 72), “A critical part of attracting more girls and women in computer science is providing multiple ways to ‘be in’ computer science.” // In other words, at least 75% of male CS undergraduates had parents who were affluent enough to be able to afford computers at a time when computers were very expensive. Clearly, enrollment in CS is a social product of class privilege, not innate ability. Furthermore, this implies that computer geek prestige is an indicator of class privilege, in addition to being connected to technical proficiency.

Let's not even get into the race distribution, or that none of the department heads or higher-ups are women, either.

A male boss is aggressive; a female boss is pushy. A male boss is attentive to details; a female boss is picky. He knows how to follow through; she doesn't know when to quit. He's ambitious; she's driven. He loses his temper occasionally; she can't control her emotions. He isn't afraid to say what he thinks; she's mouthy. He's a man of action; she's impulsive. He controls his emotions; she's cold. He thinks before he acts; she can't make up her mind. He thinks before he speaks; she second-guesses herself. He tells it like it is; she's tactless. "The exact same behavior is judged differently, depending on whether it's a male or a female doing the behavior. This is true at all levels in the organization," says Gallagher, author of "Everything I Need to Know I Learned From Other Women."

Early designs for the Na'vi “were much more alien," according to Cameron, the creator and director of the movie. In the early drawings of Neytiri, the young female love interest, “she had fins on her back and gills and all kinds of weird protuberances and so on in odd places." The beta testing went something like this: “We just kept asking ourselves—basically, the crude version is: 'Well, would you wanna do it?' And our all-male crew of artists would basically say, ‘Nope, take the gills out.' It was pretty simple.” In other words, Neytiri was created to be a sex fantasy.

To those who would say “It’s just a blockbuster, don’t look too closely” a) all our media should be examined, always, because where you have media appealing to the masses is where you have saturation in our culture of values and belief systems, and b) James Cameron meant for this to be a teaching movie, and intended to bank off of our guilt and feel-good liberalism, and so he’s basically begging for it.
