The Mutant Problem - Op-Ed - NYTimes.com
You know that television show, Big Bang Theory where all the geeks live in one floor of a college dorm? That was my apartment building. There were five of us on that floor with varying flavours of dork. The skinny old building dated at least to the sixties complete with shag carpeting. Doug was the only one who didn't rip it out.

@gegoxaren Steampunk Home is the name of the blog the home is featured on? The blog author often picks decor that *can* be skewed steampunk but isn't necessarily obviously steampunk.

A stunning marriage of 19th century Swiss automata technology and exquisite craftsmanship, this pair of singing bird pistols epitomizes the creativity of watch makers in Europe to satisfy the ever-growing demands for clocks and automata by the Imperial court and its courtiers in China, as well as European aristocrats and royal families, particularly in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Other Women's Voices
The entries are on women who produced a substantial amount of work before 1700, some or all of which has been translated into modern English. Each entry will tell you about the print sources from which the translated passages are taken; it will also tell you of useful secondary sources and Internet sites, when those are available.

The Steampunk Home: Mark Phenicie's Home and Furniture
Although my furniture was influenced by my exposure to other designs i had come in contact with,it slowly evolved and was not patterned after any particular artist even though it was a combination of ideas that I pulled out of my head and were pleasing to my eye.

Approaching Aegir Through Heimdall
The familiar sound of gulls, somehow comforting to me, and the soft breathing of the breakers against the beach helped drop me easily into a trance state. I walked about a mile before I stopped and turned to face the water. There was nothing between me and the waves, nothing between the white-caps and the deep blue of the horizon. I stood there, open-eyed, letting the subtle motions of the sea fill my view. All I could see, hear, see, and feel was water.

Ode to Mulan
Disney's 1998 animated movie Mulan popularized the legend of the girl that took her father's place in the army. The legend stems from a Chinese poem, written during the Northern Wei dynasty (386-534), a time where northern china was ruled by nomadic invaders. This is reflected in the fact that the poem refers to the ruler as the Khan rather than as the Emperor. As is common with Chinese stories, it was further elaborated on as a novel during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) and as a play during the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). Her surname has been variously given as Zhu, Wei, or Hua in various sources but in fact no independent contemporary records exist to confirm her existence.

Iblis
At the Rays of Faith seminar, Sheikh Waleed Basyouni taught us about the origins of Iblis. Scholars disagree on his status prior to his damnation, some holding the opinion that he was an angel, while the majority believe that he is a jinn. The master of fitnah, a cause of controversy? Could we expect anything else?

Racing on Carbon Fiber Legs: How Abled Should We Be?
But in one instant, after Pistorius entered a summer 2007 track meet in Rome and placed second in a field of runners possessing flesh and bone legs, he and I were deemed too abled.

The Draft as a Means of Repression (1969)
The draft is one of these "subtle" weapons. Although it can be argued that all young men in the U.S. are in the same position with regard to the draft, it is a fact that, increasingly, the work of young, effective organizers is being curtailed because of it.

raising quail
I have been raising quail in my backyard since 1998. Currently I have about 100 birds in four outdoor cages. People sometimes ask why I raise quail. My typical answer can be found here. Quail are not difficult to raise if you give them enough space and sanitation (with emphasis on sanitation). Mostly they're just fun to watch and listen to as they scurry about the cages.

Pagan Dharma
Our era of profound spiritual crisis is equally an era of spiritual forment rivaled only by that time two thousand years ago that saw the emergence of Gnosticism, Christianity, and the Hermetic Tradition in the West and Mahayana Buddhism and Vedanta in the East. Today, as then, this transformative crisis is being fueled by the confluence of cultures, none of which will remain the same for that contact. Two such cultures, contemporary Paganism and Tibetan or Vajrayana Buddhism, have the potential to deeply revitalize each other and positively effect our world.

Choose Life
In some sense, to read and write fantasy literature is to commit suicide. The Freudian life-instinct can be summed up by the choice of Odysseus (or Ewan McGregor, if you prefer), while the death-instinct is to choose the unreal, the magical, the Othered, the shadows and the mimics.

The warp weighted loom is a vertical loom with an upper beam, the warp held taunt by weights (hence the name) and the weft beaten up toward the beam. It was used by most early European cultures and even survived into modern times in northern Europe.
